How not to suck as a professional writer.
The reason I talked about world creation before character creation, is that your characters need a world in which to function. If you don’t know basics about the world they’re living in, then how can you answer important questions about your characters’ lives?
Some things that you need to know about your main characters:
* the basics: name, gender, age, ethnicity, what they look like, important facial or body features (beard, tattoo, scar, etc)
* their basic personality: are they kind or rude, do they speak well or roughly, do they have empathy, and that sort of thing
* their backstory: what made them into the person that they currently are?
* their motivations and goals: what makes your characters get up in the morning? What are they working toward? What’s the most important thing in their life?
* their strengths, weaknesses, and fears: what gives them the heebeejeebees? What pulls out the lion in them, or reduces them to tears?
* their relationships: do they have a partner or several partners? are they romantic? do * they have a best friend? do they have parents, neighbors, coworkers that are even remotely connected to the story line?
Mentioned in this lesson:

Homework for the week:
* Spend no more than 30 minutes making notes about your top two or three characters.
